By embracing inclusion, we will achieve remarkable things together
27 September 2024To mark National Inclusion Week 2024, Swim England is highlighting key projects which provide equal access and opportunities.
Here, Swim England chief executive Andy Salmon describes how the national governing body is aiming to make aquatic activity inclusive for everyone.
Everyone at Swim England has a common goal – to help remove the barriers to participating in aquatic activity so that everyone can experience the joy of being active in water.
We are committed to making sure that inclusion is embedded in our decision-making process and it will be a key feature in our refreshed strategy.
This means we are actively listening, challenging biases and being intentional about the spaces we create for dialogue and collaboration.
We will hold ourselves accountable to high standards of equity and fairness, understanding that inclusion requires constant attention and a willingness to learn and adapt.
At its heart, inclusion is about recognising and valuing the uniqueness of every individual and creating an environment where everyone, regardless of background, can thrive and contribute their best.
We are stronger when diverse perspectives, experiences and talents are brought to the table – and it is our duty to ensure that everyone feels heard, respected and empowered to succeed.
Inclusion is more than a policy — it is a mindset that permeates everything we do.
Belonging and purpose
It shapes our culture, informs our leadership and guides how we interact with one another and the communities we serve.
A truly inclusive environment fosters innovation and creativity because it encourages a wide range of ideas and solutions.
National Inclusion Week is a timely reminder of the importance of this work and has highlighted some of the good things already being done.
However, we know there is so much more we need to do, both as an organisation and as a sport/community as a whole.
Inclusion is not an end goal but a continuous journey – and I am proud to lead an organisation that is deeply committed to this path.
Together, we can build a workplace and a sport where everyone feels a sense of belonging and purpose, a place where differences are celebrated as strengths.
Our success is defined by the extent to which we support and uplift one another.
By embracing inclusion, we will achieve remarkable things together.
