Eight English divers selected for World Junior Championships
September 27, 2024Eight English divers have been selected as part of a nine-strong Great Britain squad for the World Aquatics Junior Diving Championships in Rio later this year.
They’ll head to the Brazilian seaside city for the 25th edition of the Championships which will take place from Saturday 24 November to Saturday 1 December.
Amongst the group are a number of divers that are currently on or have previously been a part of the Swim England Diving pathway, including three medallists from the 2022 edition in Jordan Fisher-Eames, Maisie Bond and Oscar Kane.
Jordan Fisher-Eames and Bond secured respective Boys B and Girls B platform silver medals two years ago in Canada, whilst Kane contributed to Great Britain’s Mixed Team event bronze.
They’ll be joined by 2023/2024 Team Y athletes Skye Fisher-Eames, Todd Geggus and Robbie Wood, who will make their Junior World debuts after their success in recent months.
Skye Fisher-Eames and Wood both won individual gold medals at July’s European Junior Diving Championships whilst Geggus became Boys A 1m and 3m champion at the Aquatics GB Elite Junior Championships earlier this year.
Juliette John and Hannah Newbrook teamed up for European Junior silver in 2023 in the A/B Syncho Platform and they’ll both also be a part of the group looking for more medal moments in South America.
Scottish based diver Noah Penman – who has also been a part of a number of Swim England diving camps in the past 12 months – completes the group.
‘A good mix’
Speaking on the selections, Aquatics GB Performance Pathway Lead for Diving, Jen Leeming, said: “We’ve selected a small team of nine athletes for Rio, but within that group that we’ve got a number of previous junior European and even previous junior world medallists – there is a good mix of experience along with a few younger additions.
“For us the main priority with these upcoming championships is to provide the divers selected with a developmental experience that benefits their longer term careers, enabling them to be better prepared for the four or eight year journey ahead of them as we look towards LA 2028, Brisbane 2032 and beyond.
“Opportunities like these on the pathway also offer further development to the great bunch of coaches we have selected to travel with the team, and I think we’ll see lots of positive learnings for both athletes and coaches on this trip.”
Divers at the World Aquatics Junior Diving Championships 2024 will be divided into two age groups; athletes aged 16-18 competing in Group A events, whilst athletes aged 14-15 will compete in Group B.
Both age groups have opportunities to compete for individual titles across the 1m springboard, 3m springboard and platform events – with the age groups combined for the synchronised diving and Mixed Team events.
