City of Sheffield on top of the world after breaking record in their home pool

The City of Sheffield stole the show in session three of the GoCardless Swim England Masters National Championships after they set a new world record in their home pool.

Their Mixed 4x50m Freestyle Relay team put in an incredible performance, setting a new world record time in the 240+ age category.

Dawn Kissack, Jonathon Saunders, Lindsey Gaywood and Andrew Moore finished the race with a strong time of 1:52:06, breaking their teammates record from last year by six seconds.

There was a new British record in the 160+ age category after Alexander Smith, Michael Hodgson, Michelle Ware and Georgina Heyn of Woking secured a time of 1:40:66.

The quartet broke the record by one second, 10 years after it was set by East Leeds Swim Club.

Parr breaks his third record of the day

Four British records fell in the Open/Male Individual Medley events which included a third British record of the day for Otter’s Derek Parr.

Swimming in the 80-84 Years age category, Parr added to his 1500m Freestyle, which included an 800m British best split from the opening session to take another gold in this evening’s session.

He clocked in at 3:27.06, taking more than four seconds off his own record time to lay down a new benchmark in Sheffield.

Spencer’s Daniel Cotton was the next to break the British barrier, clocking in at 2:14.86 to take the 50-54 years record.

He finished more than three seconds faster than the rest in his age range to take the gold in Sheffield.

However Cotton also lost a record as City of Sheffield’s Paul Callis added to the clubs relay world record with a British record of his own.

He set a 2:13.60 in the 45-49 years event, beating the previous best that was set by Cotton in 2019 by just under half a second.

Woking’s Henry Goodlud also set a new British best with an impressive time of 2:03.65 in the 25-29 years 200m Individual Medley.

There were two new European records and one new British record registered in the Female 200m individual medley.

Earlier this year Nicola Charlesworth secured a new record after topping the 40-44 age category with a time of 2:25:06 but today it was broken by Woking’s Georgina Heyn, with a new European record time of 2:24:26

Another European record was bettered by four seconds in the 60-64 age category, as Judy Brown from Trafford Metro finished the race in 2:40:67.

The previous record was set by Julie Hoyle in February last year, with a time of 2:44:53.

Brown’s teammate Kathryn Greenslade also set a new British best in the 25-29 age category. Three seconds separated Greenslade (2:18:97) and Elizabeth Gray who set a time of 2:21:06 last year.

Fantastic freestyle to finish day one

There was some fantastic freestyle action to round out the opening day with more than 40 heats on display at Ponds Forge.

It resulted in six new records, including a European best effort by Barnet Copthall’s Cate Jackson.

That came in the Female 60-64 Years event where she clocked a stunning time of 1:04.54.

There were also five British best efforts with Woking’s Michelle Ware setting a new top time of 1:00.34 in the 50-54 age group whilst Rebecca Guy continued her fine form in the 30-34 years event.

The new 50m Butterfly world record holder added another British benchmark to her name, clocking in at 55.58.

In the Open/Male side of the competition, Ben Harkin, Colin Stephenson and Alistair Crawford all set British records of their own.

East Leeds’ Crawford broke the 40-44 years mark with a time of 51.98 whilst Warrington’s Harkin was just under a second slower as he set the best time in the age group above (45-49 years).

Stephenson completed a brilliant day at Ponds Forge, impressing the Sheffield crowd with a time of 1:00.89 to take the 65-69 years title with a new British record to his name.
