East Leeds at the double as four world records broken to start day two
October 26, 2024Day two at the GoCardless Swim England Masters National Championships started out with four new world records, including two from East Leeds’ Open/Male 4x50m Freestyle relay teams.
Their records came in almost back-to-back races as their 200+ Years and 100+ Years teamed both became world beaters.
Up first was the 200+ Years team of Alistair Crawford, Paul Clemence, David Emerson and Chris Knee. They set a time of 1:35.67 which bettered the previous record by around two seconds.
That record had stood for more than two years but swimming very close to home the Leeds team could not be stopped in Sheffield.
Just a couple of heats later and their 100+ Years quartet hit the same heights in one of the final races of the session.
A time of 1:30.57 saw them break a 15-year-old record which was set by Okudinhas back in 2009. It took less than 0.20 seconds off the time after a incredible effort from the Leeds swimmers.
Their team was made up of Jordan Cooley, Richard Ayre, Jeffrey Lo and Samuel Lawman.
Dartmoor and Clark hit new world records
Imogen Clark and Dartmoor Darts’ Mixed 4x100m Medley relay quartet also set new world bests on a thrilling start to the day at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.
We kicked off the morning with the Mixed 4x100m Medley Relay where Dartmoor darted their way to a world beating time courtesy of Daniel Cross, Zoe Cawsey, Matthew Henry and Lauren Quigley.
Their success came in the 100+ Years event, setting a time of 3:57.72 to be the first team to ever go under the four-minute mark.
They impressed from the off to massively improve on their time from 12 months ago which earnt them a British best of 4:01.32.
A European record was then set in the 200+ Years competition, this time from the quartet of Woking.
Their team of Michelle Ware, David Bryant, Michael Hodgson and Georgina Heyn finished in 4:23.40 with a set of stunning swims.
The final world record of the morning came from Commonwealth Games silver medallist Imogen Clark, who powered across two lengths in the Female 50m Breaststroke to become the new world record holder for the 25-29 age category.
Derby Excel’s Clark, just missed out on going under 30 seconds, clocking in at 30.06 to take the world record by 0.44 seconds.
That broke the previous best which was set back in 2014 by Czechia’s Petra Chocova.
Woking’s Heyn also another record to her name in the Female 50m Breaststroke, setting a new British benchmark with a strong time of 33.06.
In the Open/Male 50m Breaststroke their were three new British records from Neil Redman, Martin Bennell and Neil Mackinnon.
MacKinnon (Trafford Metro) impressed in the early heats, smashing the 80-84 Years best time with an effort of 48.38.
He was followed up by a pair of strong swims that saw Basingstoke’s Benell set a 29.20 for the 45-49 Years record and Portsmouth Northsea’s Redman clocking in at 27.93 for the 30-34 years top time.
Barnet swimmers on form in 20om Freestyle
Barnet Copthall swimmers dominated in the 200m Freestyle as three of their swimmers obtained British records in the event.
Cate Jackson swam an impressive 2:23.32 to secure a British and a European record in the female 60-64 age category – beating her entry time by 1.5 seconds.
Having swam a fantastic 100 freestyle in yesterday’s final session, Jackson’s performance this weekend means she is now the British and European record-holder in both the 100m and 200m.
Her Barnet teammates, Jascha Hasson and Mark Reynolds also won British records in the men’s 50-54 and 60-64 age categories respectively. Hasson swam a two-second personal best to finish in 2:02.09, breaking the previous British record by half-a-second. Reynolds narrowly beat the previous record in his age category, touching the wall in 2:07.42 – just 0.15 under the former record.
Also in the 200m free, Gloucester’s Jayne Stephenson swam a British record in the female 70-74 age category in a time of 2:48.62.
Two more British records fell in the Female 100m Individual Medley. Jessica Shaw, from Otter Swimming Club, won the 25-29 age group in an outstanding 1:03.68, smashing the previous record by over half a second.
In the female 40-44 category Heyn, representing Woking, touched in 1:05.21 – pipping the previous record of 1:05.30 by less than a tenth of a second. This adds to her collection of titles, having obtained the British and European record in the 200m medley on Friday as well as her two further records in this mornings session.
In the Female 4x50m Freestyle relay, it was a team effort for Trafford Metro to win a British and European record in the 200+ age category.
The team, composed of Sarah Johnson, Judy Brown, Hannah Atkin and Helen Sadler, touched in a time of 1:55.79 – two seconds under the old record.
In the 160+ age group, Basingstoke won a British record in a time of 1:48.30. Swimmers Sarah Hunt, Elizabeth Godfrey, Fleur Turner and Erin Robertson put in a stellar performance to smash the record by almost two seconds – taking it under 1:50 for the first time.
In the Open/Male 100m Individual Medley just one record was broken, courtesy of Warrington’s Ben Harkin.
Swimming in the 45-49 age category, Harkin went under a minute to clock in at 58.84 to become a British record holder for the second time at this Championships after his effort in the 100m Freestyle yesterday.
