Records continue to fall as Championships passes halfway mark

Session five of the GoCardless Swim England Masters National Championships saw a whole host of world, European and British records toppled as the Championships passed the halfway mark.

Derby Excel’s Georgina Pryor dipped under the minute-mark to touch in a 59.90 – earning herself not only a British record, but also a European and world record in the 100m back for the Female 25-29 age group. She becomes the first woman to break this barrier in her age category.

This is Pryor’s second record of the Championships, having obtained a British record in the 50m butterfly on day one.

The second world record of the session came during the Open/Male 4x100m Freestyle Relay from the East Leeds’ team in the 200+ age category.

Alistair Crawford, Paul Clemence, David Emerson and Chris Knee swam a 3:38.78 to lower the record by an impressive seven seconds.

Crawford swam a 51.58 on the first leg to break the individual record for the 100m freestyle in the 40-44 age category.

The first event of the session, the 4x50m mixed medley relay, witnessed two British records being broken. In the 120+ age category, Dartmoor Darts Aquatic swam a speedy 1:47.94 to win the title.

The combined efforts of swimmers Lauren Quigley, Zoe Cawsey, Robert Shaw and Grant Quigley saw them smash the former record by over three seconds.

Robert Shaw and Grant Quigley later went on to win a further British record in the Open/Male 4x100m freestyle relay for the 120+ age group.

Together with Matthew Henry and Clive Marquis, they were able to touch in a time of 3:27.09 – breaking the record by just 0.8 of a second.

The club’s team in the 100+ age category gained Dartmoor’s third record of the session in the same event and this time it was a world beater.

Regan Lloyd, Jamie Ingram, Sonny Trigg and Freddy Clampett swam an impressive 3:20.60 to drop four seconds from the previous record.

It was a race where each of the top three teams went under the world record time with East Leeds and Woking also impressing.

But it was Dartmoor who had the edge after Ingram powered them into the lead at the halfway point.

From there they couldn’t be caught as each of them put in a strong swim to finish 1.15 seconds ahead of Leeds, with Woking just 0.40 further back.

Derek Parr gets his fifth record of the meet

In the Mixed 4x50m medley, Michelle Ware, Henry Goodchild, Michael Hodgson and Georgine Heyn, representing Woking SC, finished in a 1:51.27 – two seconds under the previous British record for the 160+ age category.

Michelle Ware additionally gained an individual British record for her efforts in the backstroke leg of the medley. Her time of 31.14 is the fastest in the 50m backstroke event in the 50-54 age category.

The 200m butterfly witnessed another four records achieved. For the open/male event, City of Sheffield’s Jamie McHale swam an astonishing 2:20.98 to gain a British record in the 50-54 age category.

In the 80-84’s, Derek Parr admirably earned his fifth record of the meet. Touching in a time of 3:50.54, Parr finished nearly two seconds faster than the old record.

Elizabeth Gray’s 2:20.64 secured her a British record in the female 30-34 years event in the Female 200m butterfly. The Aylesbury swimmer beat her season’s best by four seconds on her way to the title.

Judy Brown from Trafford Metro also dropped four-seconds from her season’s best to win a British record in the 60-64 age category. Her time of 2:45.95 just beat the previous record of 2:46.28.

Dawn Kissack breaks own 50m Freestyle European record

The ‘splash and dash’ 50m freestyle events were ones not to miss at Ponds Forge as City of Shefield’s Dawn Kissack stormed to a new European record time.

The 61-year-old finished almost a second quicker than the in form Cate Jackson and teammate Lindsey Gaywood to take the gold in an impressive time of 28.70.

That broke her own European record for the 60-64 age group, beating her previous best by 0.18 seconds.

Georgina Heyn then added another record to her collection with a new British best in the 40-44 years competition. She clocked in at 26.40, giving the Woking swimmer even more to celebrate in Sheffield.

On the open/male side of the event there was more success for East Leeds as Alistair Crawford set a stunning time of 22.89 for a national record in the same 40-44 years category.

Kirsty Johnson was the only swimmer to set a record in the female 100m backstroke with a new British best in the 40-44 Years competition.

The Bracknell swimmer clocked in with a time of 1:04.53 whilst Spencer’s Daniel Cotton was the only athlete to set a new British benchmark in the open/male event.

Cotton touched the wall in 1:00.92 which gave the Spencer swimmer gold in the 50-54 age category.
