Rapid relays takeover the records to round out day two
October 26, 2024Team spirit was high during the relays of session six and despite coming at the end of day two, the start of the session saw four records broken, including two world records.
Trafford Metro’s women put on a particularly strong performance with both the 100+ and 200+ age group teams breaking the British and European records in the 4x100m medley relay.
However, In the 200+ age group, Judy Brown, Maia Rajput-Driver, Sarah Johnson and Helen Sadler went one further by securing the world record.
They produced some outstanding swims to storm to a 4:40.36 at the finish, smashing the previous British record by 13 seconds and the world record by five seconds.
Their teammates in the 100+ age category, Kathryn Greenslade, Charlotte Taylor, Louisa Zolkiewski and Victoria Cunningham, put on an equally impressive showing. Their time of 4:15.37 is an 18-second improvement on the previous British record. They also obtained a European record, just narrowly missing out on the worlds best mark.
It was East Leeds who dominated the male 100+ age category, earning themselves the world record with a time of 3:39.19.
The team of Samuel Lawman, Richard Ayre, Jeffrey Lo and Jordan Cooley narrowly beat the Dartmoor Darts quartet to the final touch after a close race between the two teams. With Dartmoor leading at the final 50m, it was Cooley’s outstanding final 25m, (15.18 seconds) which ultimately enabled Leeds to claim the final victory.
The male 200+ age category also witnessed a new European record. Basingstoke’s Oliver Espinasse, David Milburn, Martin Bennell and Spencer Turner won their age group in a time of 4:08.44 – a five second improvement on both the previous records.
The final session on the second day at the Championships also saw some incredible swims in the 800m Freestyle events where multiple European and British records were broken.
Emma Wills and Suzanne Noble both hit new European top times in the Female 800m Freestyle.
York City’s Wills shaved six seconds off the previous European best, clocking in at 9:19.46 after 32 lengths of the Ponds Forge pool.
It broke a 14 year-old previous European mark in the 45-49 years age category, set by Swedish swimmer Susanna Rosen.
Not to be outdone, Noble then broke her own European record in the 60-64 years – taking around a second off her time from this event last year. She finished in 10:33.96.
The only other record in the female event was another for Jayne Stephenson in the 70-74 age group.
She added another British best to her collection, finishing in 12:15.43, only 0.42 ahead of Birmingham’s Anne Bourne who was swimming in the lane alongside her.
Two British records also fell in the Open/Male category as Daniel Mills and Jascha Hasson.
In the 30-34 years, Trafford Metro’s Mills set an impressive time of 8:24.34 whilst Barnet’s Hasson touched the wall in 5:54.05 for the 50-54 years record.
