Woking become world record breakers to open up final day in Sheffield
October 27, 2024Woking joined the list of world record breakers to kick off the final day at the GoCardless Swim England Masters National Championships.
Their 160+ Years Mixed 4x100m Freestyle Team stunned the crown at Ponds Forge, taking four seconds off the previous worlds best time.
The team that achieved the feat were Georgina Heyn, Michelle Ware, Michael Hodgson and Henry Goodlud.
The time of a 3.22.80 saw them finish eight seconds ahead of second place Kenilworth Masters to add to the same teams British record earlier in the competition.
Heyn particularly impressed as she clocked a new European record of her own during the race for her 100m split, setting a time of 57.85.
Trafford Metro joined Woking on the world record board during the same event with their 100+ Years quartet.
Their team of James Simpson, Daniel Mills, Kathryn Greenslade and Victoria Cunningham clocked a 3:33.81 to become the first team to go under the 3:40.00 mark.
Taking almost seven seconds off the record, the group put in yet another stunning swim to finish narrowly ahead of Dartmoor Darts’ strong team of Sonny Trigg, Regan Lloyd, Zoe Cawsey and Lauren Quigley.
City of Sheffield also hit the record books in the Mixed 4x100m Freestyle thanks to their 240+ years squad.
The experienced team of Lindsey Gaywood, Dawn Kissack, Hugh Taylor and Andrew Moore finished 14 seconds ahead of their nearest rivals to break the British best time with a 4:14.22.
East Leeds on top of the world once again
The morning started off strongly with East Leeds, continuing their fine relay form with both a world and British record in the Open/Male 4x50m Medley Relay.
The team of Samuel Lawman, Richard Ayre, Jeffrey Lo and Jordan Cooley finished in an impressive 1:38.29, breaking the previous world record for the 100+ age group by 0.7 seconds.
Samuel Lawman’s performance on the first leg of the relay meant he also won himself an individual British record in the 50m backstroke for the men’s 25-29 age group. His time of 24.83 makes him the first British man to break the 25 second barrier in the event.
In the 200+ age category, their teammates Alistair Crawford, Chris Knee, David Emerson and Paul Clemence picked up a British Record with a time of 1:50.86.
A whopping eight-seconds ahead of the rest of the field, their time was just 0.2 seconds under the former record.
The men’s 120+ age group also saw the British and European records fall. Trafford Metro’s team of Tom Gilroy, Joseph Keeley, Craig Ward and James Simpson finished in a time of 1:43.17.
After a tight race, Simpson entered the final leg in second position behind Portsmouth Northsea. His impressive effort on the 50m freestyle meant he brought home gold, and the record, for his team – touching just 0.3 seconds ahead of Portsmouth.
Another British record was toppled in the men’s 240+ age group as the Crawley team swam an excellent 2:06.23. This marks a 0.3 second improvement on the previous record.
For the female swimmers, two more European records were smashed in the 4x50m medley relay.
Trafford Metro’s Kathryn Greenslade, Charlotte Taylor, Louisa Zolkiewski and Victoria Cunningham are the first women in Europe to break the 2:00.00 barrier in the 100+ age category – recording a time of 1:57.71.
From Basingstoke, Elizabeth Godfrey, Erin Robertson, Sarah Hunt and Fleur Turner dropped two seconds from the previous British Record and matched the European record with a time of 2:00.84.
Records fly in 100m Butterfly
Both the female and the open/male’s had a flying start in the 100m individual butterfly.
Derby Excel’s Georgina Pryor, in particular, put in a stellar performance to touch in 58.81 – just dipping under the previous British and European record for the 25-29 age group by 0.07 seconds.
Derek Parr, from Otter, also won himself another British and European record in the 80-84 male group in an astonishing time of 1:27.14.
Parr is the first man in this age group to go under 1:30.00 – breaking the previous record by over five seconds.
In the 40-44 female age category, Sarah Johnson, representing Trafford Metro, swam a 1:05.11 to earn herself a British record in the event.
Warrington’s Ben Harkin swam an impressive 56.82 to break the British record by almost two seconds in the men’s 45-49 age group.
The British record was also broken in the 70-74 age group by Steven Wall of the City of Liverpool Swimming Club.
His time of 1:12.28 knocks a considerable four seconds off the previous record.
Another European record fell for the men in the 200m breaststroke 40-44 age group, with Chris Johnson of Portsmouth Northsea swimming an impressive 1:15.68 to break the prior record by 0.2 of a second.
City of Sheffield’s Ian Swift also earned a British record in the 50-54 age group with a time of 2:26.67 – breaking the 2:27.00 barrier for the first time.
There was almost as many records as races in the 400m Individual Medleys as the all rounders impressed at Ponds Forge.
Five British records were broken with Daniel Cotton, Mark Reynolds, Kellyn Caldwell and Judy Brown all adding another to their tally for the weekend.
James Wardle was also a record breaker as the Kenilworth ace touched in 4:39.29 in the Open/Male 35-39 age category.
Cotton wasn’t far off that time as he broke the 55-59 years mark. He clocked in at 4:49.20 as the Spencer swimmer secured his fourth national best time of the week.
The only other record in the open/male 400m Individual Medley came from Reynolds who took another British best after his new 200m Freestyle record earlier in the meet.
He came home in 5:13.56, a strong effort from the Barnet Copthall swimmer.
Two Female 200m Individual Medley British records fell at the hands of Judy Brown and Kellyn Caldwell.
Brown’s 5:45.56 took more than four seconds off her own record, which she set in May this year as Trafford Metro swimmers continued to impress.
Caldwell then completed the latest record hall as the Wycombe District swimmer battled through all four strokes to set an impressive time of 5:11.36.
