Records fall as para swimming community comes together at Sandwell

Multiple British para-swimming records were broken as athletes from across Great Britain were in fine form at the Aquatics GB Para-Swimming Winter Meet – hosted by Swim England.

The competition held at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre – home of the 2022 Commonwealth Games – saw the community come together with 12 Paris Paralympians taking on a number of up-and-coming stars in the para swimming world.

Kickstarting the new season, Scarlett Humphrey impressed to lower the benchmark for four British records across the weekend.

The S11 star, lowered her mark in the 50m freestyle (30.84) as well as each of the 100m backstroke (1:21.90), butterfly (1:19.75) and breaststroke (1:28.23) events.

Her performances will no doubt give her confidence heading into the new campaign with Claire Connon also hitting the record books in the Women’s 50m Freestyle with a time of 43.40. The S4 swimmers time notched her a total of 827 points for her swim, giving her second place behind Humphrey’s effort.

Meanwhile, Matthew Redfern (Men’s S13 50m Freestyle) and Brock Whiston (Women’s SM8 200m Individual Medley) rounded out a fine year for both athletes by further adding to the record books.

Redfern took gold with a time of 24.86 whilst Whiston earned an impressive 909 points for her British record effort of 2:40.86.

Team Bath AS’ Nancy Jubb had a fine meet, with three golds, which included a domestic record of her own in the Women’s S5 50m Backstroke. The 16-year-old clocked in at 44.68 to cap off her final event of the week in style.

Faye Rogers and Rio 2016 Paralympic medallist Abby Kane also set new short course marks, with Rogers improving in the Women’s SM10 200m Individual Medley (2:28.53) and Kane setting a 1:09.20 in the S13 100m Backstroke.

As well as the action in the water, the Paris stars hosted a special meet and greet for the competition’s guests and young athletes alongside Birmingham 2022 mascot ‘Perry the Bull’.

It allowed the youngsters, parents and spectators to speak to and take a picture with the Paralympians and their medals – as they continue to inspire the next generation.
